Allenby
Allenby, north of Eglinton, between Bathurst and Avenue
Road, is a mature neighbourhood, with a school known for its French immersion
program. The community was developed after Allenby Public School was opened in
1927, and named for Lord Allenby, the British World War One hero who commanded
in the Middle East (and under whom served Major T. E. Lawrence "Lawrence
of Arabia").
Motorists are about 15 minutes from the Allen Expressway via Eglinton Ave W or
from Highway 401, via Avenue Road. Toronto's downtown is a twenty minute drive via
Avenue Road. TTC bus service on Eglinton Avenue connects to the
Yonge-University-Spadina subway line, and the Avenue Road bus goes right
downtown.
Schools
The community is served by 2 elementary schools, 2 private schools, and 2 high
schools. The Upper Canada College private school is about a half-mile to the
south. Post secondary students are very close to York University's Glendon
Campus on Bayview, Seneca College's Denham Campus to the northeast, and can
access University of Toronto and Ryerson University via the
Yonge-University-Spadina subway
Shopping
Shops and restaurants along Eglinton Avenue West are close and convenient to
area residents.
Recreation
This neighbourhood has access to the 7 kilometre long paved Beltline trail that
winds through the central part of the city, that loops from Mount Pleasant
Cemetery heading NW to the Allen Expressway and then heads back southeast
through Cedarvale to Sir Winston Churchill Park. The recreation centre at
Memorial Park has an indoor and outdoor pool, a gym, a track, and two indoor
ice rinks that convert to tennis courts in the summer. There is an adjacent
baseball diamond, sports field, running track and a wading pool. There is a
multi-screen movie theatre nearby at Yonge & Eglinton.
Homes
Allenby's homes were built in the 1930s and 40s, and are mostly detached
2-storey Tudor style homes or bungalows on 25 to 35 foot lots with a driveway.
Homes in this community are well maintained and often upgraded to preserve
their heritage
